We aim at creating a stable and quality driven research cluster in Biomedicine.

BACKGROUND.

Research Background.

Almost all groups involved in the research structure are considered specialists in their fields internationally. CV is given in terms of publications in each group (total of three years is 476, with an average of 159 publications per year), which highlights the high average quality of them and their rates of impact, which in mostly form the first third in each category. Outstanding high level publications in the biomedical field, such as Nature Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, Nature Materials, Nature Reviews in Drug Discovery, PLoS Genetics ...

Various research groups at the University of Vigo were working for years in biomedicine, from various aspects such as medicine itself, biology, chemistry, physics, bioinformatics, statistics. Many of these groups are international competitive research groups and have for years been working with local hospitals in Vigo, Pontevedra and Ourense, forming a core of biomedical research in the south area of Galicia.

Also, ther is a strong commitment from the institutions (Sergas and University of Vigo) to strengthen this area of Galicia in biomedical research, despite the absence of a Faculty of Medicine in the University of Vigo. Shared Units have been established (UVI-SERGAS) between the University of Vigo and the Hospital University Complex of Vigo (CHUVI), reflecting the already existing collaboration to foster research between health services and the University, that leads to the generation and transfer of knowledge in biomedicine and health sciences through the effort of multidisciplinary basic, clinical and epidemiological capacity teams, able to coordinate with others, searching common goals.

To be mentioned is the meeting celebrated in Vigo, on 10 June 2009, the "Second Conference on Research in Biomedicine", that developed 55 talks in the biomedical field by researchers from both institutions.

To join efforts of all these groups and improve their capabilities and competitiveness, the University of Vigo sought and received european (FEDER) funding for the creation of a Center for Research in Biomedicine, which is currently under construction on the campus, and a Biomedical Unit (animal house) is almost complete.

The Biomedical Research Center aims to support more than 100 researchers integrated into research groups and shared units Uvigo/Sergas to run projects in Biomedicine around strategic lines, developing their activities at this center in the Science Park, close to CITEXVI (a cluster owned by the University of Vigo, Zona Franca, Caixanova and the Xunta de Galicia to nurse new companies), that will stimulate university spinoffs and exploit the commercial results of the undertaken research.

Socioeconomic Background.

The socioeconomic value of biomedicine is a hot issue, since it is estimated that economic activity associated with Biomedicine will constitute 20% of all activity in industrialized countries, in the near future. In addition, biotech and pharmaceutical firms based in Galicia are located in the south of the region, which is seen as a remarkable advantage to facilitate the technology transfer. Also, it is sought the obtention of patents that will help business and R&D activities to be enhaced.
